A baby elephant about five months old had accidentally fallen into a flooded quarry in the Kuda Medawachchiya jungle area in Karuwalagaswewa.Villagers reported this incident to Wildlife officials who spared no pains to rescue the animal. Helped by the Karuwalagaswewa police, the animal was rescued on Friday evening.
Wildlife officials said it appeared that the mother of the baby elephant had made attempts to rescue her offspring without success.
The baby elephant was handed over to the Karuwalagaswewa range office.
Officials who treated the injured animal said it would be despatched to the Udawalawe area.
A large crowd including many children watched the rescue carried out by Wildlife officials.
