Binara and Rasindi shine at National Under-6 Cadet Chess tourney

Binara Aradhya Gunathilaka of Dharmasoka Primary School, Mahara and Rasindi Himamsika of Worrier’s Knights Chess Academy emerged champions in the Boys and Girls categories respectively at the National Under-6 Cadet Chess Championship 2020, concluded at the Sastrananda Vidyalaya, Dehiwala last weekend.

Conducted by the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka, a total of 59 participated in the Boys section while 40 competed for the Girls supremacy.

In the Boys event after a Six Round battle, Gunathilaka clinched the championship Gold medal convincingly scoring full points, in six out of six games.

In a hectic battle for the second and third positions, J. Basuru Gunaratne of Richmond College, Galle, P.D.T. Dinsas Yasarathne of Sumudha College, K.M.S. Saneth Hemapala of Sri Gnanodya Central College, K.P.D.M.P. Jayarathne of Maliyadeva Primary School and H.S. Perera of Sumudha College, Gampaha scored five points each. For their better tie breakers, Basura Gunaratne and Dinsas Yasarathne were awarded silver and bronze medals respectively at the end.

Rasindi Himamsika stood above the other girls as she scored 5.5 points out of six games to emerge winner of the Gold medal in the girls category.

A stiff completion took place among the girls for the silver and bronze medal positions too as T. Sanali Wijesekera of Swarnapali Balika Maha Vidyalaya, R. Lohansa Jayaweera of Musaeus College, Colombo, K.V. Thilanya Jithuli of Dharmapala Vidyalaya, Pannipitiya and K.A. Janumi Chanulya were tied up with five points each. Finally Sanali Wijesekera and Lohansa Jayaweera won the silver and bronze medals respectively for better tie breakers.
