Sussex Schools Network calendar winds up with Chess tournament

It has been an excellent year for Sussex College Network and its annual sports event calendar came down with the successful conclusion of the 13th Inter-Sussex Chess Championship worked off at the Malabe Sussex College Auditorium last week.

This being the last event of the calendar, where almost 275 competitors from the wide spread 20 branches network participated, Kandy Sussex College emerged champions with 152 points and carried away the Sunil Jayatissa Challenge Trophy.

To win the title for the third year in succession Sussex Kandy outsmarted Malabe Sussex, who became runners-up with 125 points. Randil Lakshitha, FIDE ELO rating 1987, who represents Sri Lanka in Common Wealth games, Asian Games and the World Youth Chess Olympiad many times, was the chief guest while K.A. Sunil Jayatissa, the Founder Chairman of Sussex College Network, graced the occasion as the guest of honour.

Addressing the gathering Lakshitha said that he was extremely lucky to have selected an intellectual game like chess that has helped him to face challenges in life.

“It has molded me to be extraordinary, spontaneous and target oriented,” he stated.

He also advised the young players to practice hard and be determined. He had observed the young ones battling hard and been focused.

“The young ones has to be methodically planned and handle with care. However the chess player will have an edge over the others,” he added, while congratulating the winners and conveying better luck to others.

Sunil Jayatissa, the founder Chairman and CEO said that he was delighted to see such a lot of competitors who thronged along with their parents and staff members to participate at the chess championship.

“The standards exhibited has been very satisfactory. The coaches and teachers must do their best and the ultimate objective is to produce national level sportsmen and sportswomen,” he commented.

He also commended the organising committee for a very professional tournament conducted, while conveying that the Sussex College Network (SCN) had already made arrangements to establish division for sports activities professionally.

“The entire Sussex College Network would gain a lot as a result of this move.” he added.
