Sri Lanka’s men and women fall short at ICF Carrom 2019

Sri Lanka men emerged runners-up while the women slicers finished second runners-up

India defeated Sri Lanka in the men’s team event 3/0 at the 8th International Carrom Federation (ICF) Championship held in Pune, Mumbai, India from December 2 to 6 while Maldives beat Sri Lanka 2/1 in the women’s team finals to occupy the second runner-up position.

Sri Lanka took part in this competition as the reigning world champions in the men’s category and as runners-up in the women’s category, defeating 23 countries.

The ICF championships is held once in four years and worked off in four categories – men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s team and women’s team. Over 100 players from 16 countries participated in this event.

India emerged winners to clinch both the men’s and women’s singles and team events, as well as the Swiss league events.

Nishantha Fernando and Shaheed Hilmy were able to secure the 6th and 7th places respectively and Rebecca Dalrine, Maduka Dilshani and Joseph Roshita were able to secure 5th, 6th and 8th positions respectively in international rankings.

The Sri Lankan contingent returned on December 8 and received by the officials of the Sports Ministry and the Carrom Federation of Sri Lanka (CFSL). Vice-president of CFSL Susantha Fernando and Asst. Secretary Karunaratne Jayasinghe were the officials on this tour.

Women’s team – 2nd runners-up: Joseph Roshita (captain), Maduka Dilshani, M. Chitradevi Rebecca Dalrine
