The Higher Education Ministry (HEM) has introduced a scheme where students, who have followed Bio-Science, Arts and Commerce, will be able to follow courses in Computer Science in Non-State Universities (NSU) and Higher Education institutes, after completing a ‘Bridging Course’, a senior HEM official said.

HEM Additional Secretary (NSUs) K.R. Uduwawala, told Education Times that the facility will provide a wider opportunity to follow Computer Science related courses through the process, to become more employable.

“The facility is available in foreign countries, but not in Sri Lanka to date,” Mr Uduwawala explained.

He said, students desirous of following the 6-month ‘Bridging Course’, providing basic knowledge on Maths, which is required for the Computer Science course, will be required to have over 70% to be eligible for the Computer Science course.

“We have noticed there are talented students in Bio-Science, Arts and Commerce, capable of successfully following Computer Science,” he added.

The relevant regulations have been approved by the University Grants Commission.

He said they intend to implement the reverse of this scheme by providing facilities for those who have done Maths, Science and Arts to follow Commerce Courses through a similar ‘Bridging Course’, for which the required regulations have been sent to the Legal Draftsman.
