The Ceylon Teachers Services Union (CTSU) is to refrain from Trade Union (TU) action following an assurance from the Ministry of Education (MoE) to grant permanent appointments to 4,000 Teachers who completed their training recently.

CTSU Secretary Mahinda Jayasinghe said that 4,000 Teachers had been trained as Teacher Assistants, of whom 3,000 are Tamil medium and the rest are Sinhala medium, and will serve in the North, East and Plantations sector.

“There was an assurance, these newly trained Teachers would be recruited into the permanent service, but now we are made to understand there is a move to bring some from outside and appointment them instead. If this is done, we will resort to trade union action,” he said.

He added, their delegates met with MoE Secretary Sunil Hettiaratchchi, who assured these teachers would be given the appointments as promised.
“We have given them time till year end. If the appointments are not given, we will resort to TU action,” he added.
