Sri Lankan film lovers will have an opportunity to experience the world renowned Iranian cinema, with reputed director Mohsen Abdolvahab’s “Being Born” (Be Donya Amadan), screened at 4 pm on November 2 at the Iran Cultural Centre,6 Sir Ernest De Silva Mawatha, Colombo 3.

At a time when abortion has become one of the subjects that Sri Lankan society is debating over, the film narrates how an Iranian middle class family views it.

Iranian film director Pari and theatre actress Fahrad live happily with their son in Teheran. They plan to buy a flat. The theatre group actress Fahrad fears the play they are working on might be censured. When Fahrad discovers she is pregnant, the young couple thinks wiser not to have a second child in the family. They meet first a doctor who agrees to carry out an abortion. Fahrad goes back on her decision, convinced that it is inhuman to kill this child to be born, and that it will not bring more happiness into their family. For this reason, she declines an important part a stage director just proposed to her. Both of them stand firm, and strong tensions takes place…

The film deals with the universal question of abortion, with burning issues in many countries. This portrayal of Iranian middle class also tackles issues of freedom and censorship.

The cast of “Being Born” includes Hedayat Hashemi, Elham Korda, Sepahrad Farzami, Reza Mortazavi and Behnaz Jafari. Behind the screen, the screenplay is written by Mohsen Abdolvahab, cinematographer is Mohammad Ahmadi, editor Sepideh Abdolvahab and Peyman Yazdanian has done the score.
