The public from Tuesday will be able to get full details of registered motor vehicles via their mobile phones or by visiting a website under a new facility to be provided by the Motor Traffic Department. Motor Traffic Commissioner General S.H. Harischandra said the facility would be useful for those planning to buy a vehicle and need to check if the vehicle was genuinely registered and other details including the year of manufacture, registration, and the owners.

Mr. Harischandra said people would be able to get some details free of charge, but would need to pay Rs. 150 if they wanted detailed information about a vehicle.
The commissioner said that as a security precaution, those seeking information would have to register by entering their name, national identity card number and phone number.

He said persons could obtain limited information, by typing dmt(space)info(space)Vehicle and sending the SMS to 1919. He said this would help minimise frauds as those who wished to buy vehicles could get necessary details immediately. Another service available to the people would be to find out the latest vehicle number registered with the department so that they could book vehicle numbers in advance. These services will be launched by Transport Minister Ranjith Madduma Bandara on Tuesday.
