Education Minister Akila Virja Kariyawasam has directed his officials not to act on ‘unofficial’ directives reportedly given by him.

The directive came after a man pretending to be the Minister of Education had recently contacted the Western Provincial Director of Education, Wimal Gunaratne to effect the transfer of a teacher.

Only after the transfer was effected it was found that the caller was an impersonator.

Investigations are under way to identify the caller.

The Minister warned that such impersonators will be strictly dealt with according to the law.

He said that, in future, if action is to be taken on instructions reportedly coming from him, the bona fides of the directive must be ascertained. Usually, he would be issuing written instructions through the Ministry Secretary.
