Major General H.C.P. Goonetilleke has been appointed the Commandant of the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force. The 70,000-strong Volunteer Force is a formidable part of the Army and played a significant role in ending the 30-year war. Maj. Gen. Goonetilleke led the Volunteer Force troops in many battles, especially the battles that took place in Mannar from 2006 to late 2008.

Major General Goonetilleke joined the Sri Lanka Army on August 31, 1981 having completed his primary and secondary education at St. Benedict’s College Colombo 13 and Royal College Colombo 7.

He followed the Basic Officer Cadet Course at the Sri Lanka Military Academy Diyatalawa passing out as the Best All Round Officer Cadet winning the Sword of Honour. He was commissioned in the Corps of Engineers as a Second Lieutenant on July 17, 1982.
