Fifteen million eligible to vote at 2015 Presidential election

The registration figures of voters which will be used for the upcoming Presidential elections were released by the Elections Commissioner this week.
Accordingly more than 15 million Sri Lankans are registered voters and are eligible to vote at the January 8 Presidential election, the Elections Department said.

According to the latest figures compiled this week 15,044,490 people have been registered as voters — 292,322 more than the number registered in 2013.

The highest number of voters – 1,637,537 – registered is from the Gampaha District. Colombo District and Kurunegala Districts have 1,586598 and 1,266,443 voters respectively. The lowest number of voters is from the Wanni District with 253,058 voters.

At the last Presidential election in 2010, the number of registered voters was about 14 million. President Mahinda Rajapaksa obtained around six million votes (57.88 per cent) while his opponent Sarath Fonseka got around 4.1 million votes (40.15 per cent).
