A successful tour which helped the Sri Lanka junior table tennis team earn 12 medals, which included four silver and eight bronze, ended last week. Sri Lanka fielded 14 paddlers for the South Asian Junior Table Tennis Championship 2014 which was held at the Liaquat Gymnasium in Islamabad, Pakistan with the participation of six countries.

Sri Lanka competed from Under-18 Junior and Under-15 Cadet categories under girls’ and boys’ categories, and were able to put up a reasonably fine performance for their medals. They were well on par with other contenders from hosts Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Maldives.
Sri Lanka won silver medals in Under-18 Girls’ team category as well as the Under-18 Girls’ Doubles. The girls’ took much of the honours by claiming the silver medal in Under-15 Cadet Girls’ team category. The boys too put up a sterling performance to win the Under-15 Cadet team silver medal.

Bronze medals were claimed by the boys in Under-18 Team, Doubles and Singles categories. They also won the bronze medal in Under-15 Cadet Boys’ Singles. The girls won two bronze medals each in the Under-18 Singles and Under-15 Cadet Singles.

The competition which began on August 27 was held for four days in Islamabad. The Sri Lanka juniors received the generous sponsorships from National Savings Bank, Serendib Sports and Stag International for the overseas tour which ended in a grand success.
