Exporters’ testing standards for discussion at Colombo seminar

Sri Lanka is now in the process of negotiating a Free Trade pact with China with apparel and footwear being the key sectors expected to benefit from such an arrangement, a media release issued by the Sri Lanka Apparel Exporters Association (SLAEA) stated.

One area of concern to the exporter is the stringent testing standards currently adopted by the Chinese authorities, it was noted.
SLAEA in association with SGS Lanka (Pvt) Ltd, a leading inspection, verification, testing and certification company, is organising a seminar to educate the exporters on the Chinese testing standards. The seminar will be held at the Hilton Colombo Residence on Tuesday, August 5.

Dr Jane Jiang, Global Technical Director of SGS will visit Sri Lanka to conduct this half day session which will give an insight to exporters on the mandatory requirements. Dr Jiang whilst being a member of the Textile Environmental Committee of China has nearly 30 years experience in the textile industry and has taught on textile chemistry in several universities in northeast and central China.

Her areas of strengths include studying the structure and properties of high molecule materials, development of new technology and auxiliaries and providing technical support to factories.

Among the topics that will be covered at the seminar are an overview of administration rules on product quality supervision system for import and sale to the China market; introduction to mandatory Chinese technical code of current textile and apparel market for national general safety technical code for textile products and labeling – instructions for use of products of consumer; and Chinese product standard system and how to select the correct product code, the release stated.
