The Kanway Autodrome in Mirigama will be the venue for the inaugural Kaije Super Star 2014 Motorcycle Championship, a racing series for novice riders. The series, one of a kind in Sri Lanka where motorbikes are highly utilised, is specially designed for enthusiastic novice riders mounted on standard road-going motorcycles in head-to-head competition on track.

According to Shane Gunawardene, a veteran rider who manages the Kanway Autodrome, the series is all about breeding new racing riders in a country where talent is abundant.

“We can consider this as the beginning of a championship where the racing fraternity can anticipate more riders into the competitive track. If you take the racing calendar, the riders and drivers have an eventful year with plenty of racing events. Despite training programmes held across the country by various groups, we really don’t see any feasible channel to promote novices into the next level. This will be a programme with a long term and comprehensive vision,” Gunawardene stated.

The three-legged series will be open to riders who will have to meet a few requirements laid out by the organisers. According to the requirements the competitors must possess ‘a valid motorcycle licence, enjoy a good health and the desirous of exploring their riding skills.

“It’s a very good opportunity for riders to test their machines, used on ordinary roads, against friends, colleagues and other competitors similar to them, in organised racing conditions conducted by trained and experienced racing officials,” he added.

The Kaije Super Star 2014 Motorcycle Championship is organised jointly by Leader Group, importers of Kaije motorcycle batteries, the Sri Lanka Motor Cycle Club, the Negombo Motor Sports Club and the Nuwara Eliya Motor Sports Club. The championship will have two categories, the 125cc and 180cc. The first race of the series will be held next Sunday (May 25) at the Mirigama track followed by other races on October 19 and December 7.

After each meet riders will be awarded with points according to finishing positions in each classified category. The rider with the highest points tally at the end of season will be declared the Kaije Racing Super Star 2014. All races in the series will be run on tracks sanctioned by the Federation of Motorcycle Sports in Sri Lanka and the Mirigama track will be the designated track for this year’s triple meets.
