Cell death in Wattala Police Station

A probe has been launched into the death of a man who died while in overnight custody at Wattala Police Station, a Police Media Office spokesman said a short while ago.

The death had apparently taken place on late Thursday night, following the man’s arrest for alleged drunken behaviour in public, he said.

He was a resident of Palliyawatte in Wattala, according to police.

In a similar case reported on Saturday last week, another person under the influence of liquor, died while in custody at the Anuradhapura Police station.

He had been earlier picked up by a police night patrol and handed over to the Anuradhapura Police station.

Woman killed in her home

A single woman living alone was found murdered inside her two-storey residence at Gabadawatta in Homagama, yesterday night, police said today.

Police who entered the building after being alerted by neighbours, found the victim in the washroom with her throat slashed.
Police believe that a gang of burglars could have been responsible, as the apartment was found ransacked.

Further investigations are being conducted by the Homagama Police.

Meanwhile, police were also probing the cause of death of a middle aged woman whose body was found inside a water hole at a location in Malangamuwa in Badulla, yesterday night.They said the victim was clad in a skirt and blouse and was around 45 years in age.
No other identification was found on the victim, according to police.

Badulla Police are conducting further investigations.
