‘Hela Viru Rasa Udanaya 2014’ – first-ever grand Exhibition of Culinary Arts and Skills of Army personnel will open in Nuwara Eliya, on Tuesday around Gregory’s Lake.

Commander, Security Force Headquarters- Central (SFHQ-C), Maj. Gen. U.A.B. Medawela, chief organiser of the programme, said that, for the first time in Army history, soldiers stationed in all corners of the island, will present varying culinary habits, specific to respective areas by preparing those dishes at Nuwara Eliya, enabling visitors to enjoy exclusive ‘regional’ flavours prepared by Army chefs.

Traditional sweetmeats – Bondi Aluwa, Patta Aluwa, Patta Dodol, Kurakkhan Thalapa and Aanama, Kirala Drinks, along with many other local vegetable and sweetmeat will be available.

He said the project was meant to create public awareness on the quality and nutritional value of foods from various corners of the island and highlight the importance of using indigenous food varieties at local level.

The programme will continue till April 22.

Funds generated by the project are to be utilised for the greater benefit of the soldiers and members of their families, including those who are disabled.

More than 40 Army bands including Calypso groups will provide music at the exhibition venue through its duration.
He said that the Army Commander Lt. Gen. Daya Ratnayake, expects to make it an annual feature in the Army calendar, during the popular April season in Nuwara Eliya.
