Farood’s goal gives Zahira Maradana win over Al-Aksa

Hosts Zahira College Colombo defended their stronghold, spearheaded by striker Mohamed Farood, who scored the vital goal in a nerve-wracking 1-0 win against dark horses Al-Aksa College Kinniya, in the final of the Zahira Super 16 Soccer Championship at Maradana yesterday. Thus Zahira claimed the Peace Cup on offer in their year’s edition of the Schools Super 16 Invitational Soccer 7s competition which saw its ninth year coming to an end, after a fitting finale.

Zahira and surprise entrants to the Cup final, Al Aksa, battled ferociously to overpower one another with a sole aim of clinching the main award. In a battle that took all spectators off their seats, Farood struck the crucial goal for his team as the Zahira celebrated in style, a hard fought win. Farood was named the most valuable player of the tournament while his team mate Zahid Riabdeen clinched the award for the best goalkeeper of the tournament.

Zahira College Mawanella outplayed much fancied St. Joseph’s College by 2-0 to clinch the Plate championship while two of the most favoured contenders Maris Stella College Negombo and St. Benedict’s College Kotahena battled for the Bowl title. In the end Maris Stella stole the thunder with a stunning 2-1 win. Wesley College got the better of D.S. Senanayake College by 2-0 to claim the Shield championship.

The tournament which coincided with the 10th anniversary of its organisers, the Past Pupils Association, attracted the 7s Soccer teams of hosts Zahira Colombo, Ananda, D.S. Senanayake, De Mazenod, Hindu, Isipathana, Maris Stella Negombo, St. Benedict’s, St. Joseph’s, Wesley, Holy Cross Kalutara, Al-Aqsa Kinniya, Manipai Hindu Jaffna, St. Mary’s Kegalle, St. Thomas’ Matara and Zahira Mawanella. – NA
