Sangamitta BV defeated Janadhipahti BV, Nawala 4-3 on penalties to win the Under 19 All Island National Schools hockey championships at the Astro turf recently.

In the 10th minute of the game, Sangamitta were awarded a penalty and centre-half Nawanjana Ekanayake made no mistake from the spot.

In the 28th minute, Janadhipathi drew level when left extreme Malindi Maleesha sounded the boards and one minute later they took the lead when centre forward Anjali Dilhari broke through the Sangamitta defence.

With time running out it looked as if the Matale girls would return without the plum. But once again it was Nawanjana Ekanayake who came to their rescue to fire the equalizer in the 49th minute and the scores were deadlocked at 2-2 when time was blown.

The game was refereed by D.S. Prakash and Ajith Manjula, while Duminda Perera was the third umpire.

In the play-off for third place, a goal in the fourth minute by T. Paranagama gave Seetha Devi BV, Matale a 1-0 win over Musaeus College (BM).

Villawaarachchi fires hat-trick for STC, Matale

Centre forward Nipuna Villawaarachchi was in cracking form when he slotted in three successive goals to give St. Thomas’ College, Matale a 3-0 win over Christ Church College and the Boys’ Under 19 All-Island National Schools Hockey Championship.
At halftime the score was 1- 0 in favour of St. Thomas’.

In the 5th minute of the game, Villawaarachchi put St. Thomas’ one up.

After the change of ends, Villawaarachchi made it 2-0 in the 32nd minute and in the 45th minute he fired his third goal to complete his hat-trick and give St. Thomas’ College a 3-0 victory. The game was controlled by M. Parandaran and S.W. Jayasinghe, while T. K. Wickramaratne was the third umpire.

In the play-off for third place, Zahira College, Matale defeated Joseph College, Wennappuwa 1-0. The game’s scorer was forward Mohamed Ifras. (BM)
