Kandy SC out to regain Inter Club League

Defending Inter Club Clifford Cup champions and League runner-up Kandy Sports Club will be all out to retain the lost pride last year at the hand of Havelocks SC. They will be coming out as one of the strongest contenders to claim back the Inter club leaue and bring it back to their Club house Nittawela after lapse of one year when the Inter club rugby season kicks off in early November this year.

After the completion of HSBC Asian Sevens series in Thailand, Mumbai and Singapore the players will be back with their clubs to fire all cylinders before the much looked forward season kicks off will see no less than 10 teams locking horns. The Hambantota Sharks will make their club debut and will be coached by Nihal Viper Gunaratne.

Kandy Sports Club’s appointed skipper GayanWeeraratne is nursing an injury which will require attention in the near future. In case of surgery his younger brother Roshan Weeraratne is tipped to take over the side. Nearly 45 players are hard at practice at a newly laid green grass at Nittawela. Seniors such as Saliya Kumara, Sean Wijesinghe, Prasad Chathuranga, Roshan Weeraratne, Kishore Jahn, Fazil Marija, Gayan Jayawardena, Moahmed Jabbar, Keith Gurusinghe, Asitha Ratnayake, Dinesh Sanjeewa, Damith Dissanayake, Tharindu Chanaka, Nuwan Hettiarachchi, Heshan Silva, Lavanga Perera, Oshan Perera and Pradeep Liyanage, are at practices.

More than 10 school boys who played this year’s inter-school rugby season also looking out for opportunity at the Up Country Clubs which carries a proud history over 138 years in existence. Former Havies player Anuruddha Wilvara and former National Youth Asiad skipper and Trinity “Lion” Randika Alwis will also play for Kandy SC this year. To add more power Kandy SC will contract 4 foreign players, two from Tonga and the other two from New Zealand before November this year. Club will also look out for opportunity in fielding a side for the “B” division. They are coached by Neil Footie. Kapila Silva is the Manager with LasanthaWijesuriya acting as the Rugby Chairman.

Club is propped up Cargills, Etisalat and Singer with the valuable support from ever reliable Malik Samarawickrema who helped the club to revamp and to bring to this top position since 1992 onwards.
