Wesley swimming gala makes big splash
View(s):The first ever Wesley College swimming gala, which was organized by the Batch of 93 to promote the sport among all Wesleyites, got off in grand style and provided yet another avenue for the its students to prove their talent.
The event featured action in the Under 7, 8, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17 and 19 age groups and saw the boys compete in the Freestyle, Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke and Medley Relay for juniors and seniors covering distances of 25m, 50m 100m and 200m. Around 2,000 boys participated in over two days of heats, which were planned before the final event.
The Overall Best Swimmer of the event was awarded to the captain of the Wesley swimming squad, Mario Gurusingha. The Overall Under 19 Championship winner was Mario Gurusingha, the Under 17 Championship went to Thariq Bin Ubaid, the Under 15 Champion was Shamod Athulathmudali, the Under 13 Champion was Aaqib Thahir, the Under 11 Champion was Murthaaz Abdul Barry and the Under 9 Joint Championship was awarded to Wahid Hassen and Akif Ahamed. Principal Dr. Shanthi McLelland distributed awards and certificates to the winners. - NA
