Blue Star remains sharp as the leader of Group ‘A’ while Solid Sports Club looks firm from Group ‘B’ as the Dialog Champions League 2013 football tournament completed its 12th week. Blue Star, who took the reign a fortnight ago last Sunday, settled to a nil-all draw against bottom seed Negombo Youth but a win would have made their position much stronger than it is at present. They are two points ahead of Colombo Football Club and Navy Sports Club who are at second and third positions respectively.

Colombo FC and Navy SC swapped places after last weekend’s results ended much in favour of the former. Their dominant 5-0 win against favourites Java Lane at Sugathadasa Stadium was sufficient for Colombo FC to state their intentions with a further ten matches to be played. Colombo FC will be eagerly hoping to become the table leaders but Navy would be another strong contender for the DCL 2013 plum. Life will not be the same for Blue Star when the second round resumes next weekend, as they will have to withstand tremendous pressure in order to maintain their spot as group leader.

Navy and fourth-placed Saunders ended their match in a thrilling nil-all draw and it only cost the former their place. Saunders remains where they were followed by Matara City, who will be looking to take the place of the glamour boys. Despite Java Lane’s big defeat by Colombo FC, they remain at sixth place as Air Force hopped a place up after beating bottom seed Super Sun 2-0 at Kalutara. Ratnam did not play a match last week but lost their place to the airmen as Negombo Youth is slotted one point behind them at ninth. Super Sun remains at the bottom after an unimpressive campaign.

From Group ‘B’ Solid SC continues to shine brightly after becoming the first team to acquire 20 points from the competition. They look well set for the second round after being one of the few teams who got the opportunity to enjoy the three-week break before resuming play in the second round. Army Sports Club remains at second but they could have easily challenged Solid SC for the top spot had they won the game against Kalutara Park played at the City Football Complex. Instead they were held to a 0-0 draw by the bottom-seeded team.

Pelicans moved two places to third after handing New Youngs a 1-0 beating at Maligapitiya ground in Kurunegala. As a result Upcountry Lions and Nandimithra lost a place and were pushed down to fourth and fifth positions respectively. The bottom half teams, Don Bosco, Renown, New Youngs, Police and Kalutara Park remain from sixth to the bottom respectively in Group ‘B’. The second round of the DCL 2013 competition will begin from next weekend. – NA
