In five more days a galaxy of future cricketing stars of Sri Lanka cricket will converge at the BMICH for the Bata-Sunday Times Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year awards presentation 2013.

Remember, Friday, August 2, at the BMICH. Former President, Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka, Ana Punchihewa will be the chief guest.

Under Mr. Punchihewa’s vision and leadership, Sri Lanka went on to win the Wills World Cup in 1996 under the captaincy of Arjuna Ranatunga, who himself was a recipient of this prestigious award during his schooling days.

Of course Mr. Punchihewa will have lots of advice to impart to the budding national and international level cricketers who will attend the event.

The star of the day, Kusal Mendis, who is the Bata-the Sunday Times Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year 2013, has already proved his credentials as a future star. On the day of the show, Kusal, the captain of the Sri Lanka Under-19s, will be fresh off two Youth Tests against the India Under-19s. Soon after the memorable and landmark occurrence of his career as a schoolboy cricketer, Kusal will be back in action, leading the Sri Lanka Under-19s in three Youth ODIs against the India Under-19s.

Kusal will be the fitting example for thousands of young cricketers who look forward to a bright future at the top level. As the organisers of this prestigious event, Bata and the Sunday Times hope more and more cricketers, through this event, will benefit on their way to the upper echelons of cricket. Nevertheless, our wish is that the nearly 200 award winners would experience an unforgettable night that will last for years to come.

Besides Mr. Punchihewa, among those who are billed to grace the event will be top cricketing personalities namely Jayantha Seneviratne, who headed a panel of experts to pick the winners, former national Test cricketers Brendon Kuruppu and Asoka de Silva and top cricket coach Carlton Bernadus. Officials from the Bata Shoe Company, headed by its Managing Director Vikas Anand and Financial Controller Hatta Tutuko, will also grace the show. The gala night will include a series of entertainment activities between the presentation of awards.
