With the prevailing rainy weather conditions curtailing play on the first day’s play on Friday, the SLC Inter-Club Under-23 Division I cricket tournament matches got off at four venues on time while the game at Bloomfield ground started after lunch yesterday.
The personal best by left-arm orthodox spinner Thenuka Dhananjaya of Leos SC Ambalangoda was short lived Chamath Gunasinghe of Moors struck at Braybrooke Place. Moors batting first were bowled out for 218 in their first innings after Dhananjaya’s 6 for 37 on a track that helped spinners, especially the left-armers. Gunasinghe returned to rattle the Leos batting with impressive figures of 7 for 49. Leos were shot out for 132 runs in reply.

Patient knocks of 47 and 39 by Priyantha Kumara and Lakshitha Madushan helped Army SC make a bold reply against Colts at Havelock Park. Army were 160-6 in reply to Colts 161 at stumps. Shehan Fernando top scored for Clots with 41 and returned to pick two scalps while off-spinner Lakshan Madushanka picked 5 for 40.

Opener Manoj Sarathchandra played a solid rock knock of 150 not out off 256 deliveries to put Tamil Union in a strong position at 362 for three declared against CCC at the P. Sara Oval. Sarathchandra decorated his knock with 14 fours and one six. National Test cap Kithruwan Vithanage made 69.

Bloomfield were in deep trouble trailing by 131 runs against Air Force at Rifle Green. In reply to Air Force’s 193 Bloomfield were struggling at 62 for the loss of six wickets.

The only match that was fortunate to have played on Friday was between Ragama CC and Moratuwa SC but yesterday’s play resumed at 1.00pm at the Bloomfield ground. Moratuwa SC who were 5 for no loss in four deliveries overnight were shot out for 112. Ragama CC made a strong reply by racing to reach 124 runs without losing a wicket in just 18 overs. Opener Udara Jayasundera continued his good by hammering an unbeaten 84 from 58 deliveries inclusive of seven sixes and three fours. The matches will end today. – MSA
