Sri Lanka Cricket felicitated the national women’s cricket team for their excellent performance and number five ranking at the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup, held in India earlier this year.
The 15-member squad was given cheques of Rs. 100,000 each at a ceremony held at the Taj Samudra.
Speaking to the Sunday Times, Nishantha Ranatunga, the Secretary of SLC, who was present at the ceremony said, “The reason the felicitation ceremony for the women’s cricket team took long was because the girls had another tournament against the West Indies almost immediately after they got back from India.” He added that it was better late than never.
The female cricketers themselves were overjoyed by the recognition they were given by SLC and speaking to the Sunday Times, the skipper of the national women’s squad, Sashikala Siriwardena, said that this gesture by SLC motivated them in many ways.
“It shows that the SLC recognises us for what we did at the recently concluded ICC Women’s World Cup, and it motivates the girls to perform better in our future assignments.” – SC
