He picks up the heaviest weights on the rack, and starts squatting with them just for starters. We ask him is that all you got?, and Ranil Harshana, Fitness Director at ODEL’s O-Tone gym lunges at the punching bag lifting himself off the air and shows us his moves – extreme is the word.

It’s a buzzing world out there and sometimes you tend to overlook the most important things in life – physical fitness being at the prime. “I’m eating low fat, doing a few squats and the morning jog”- you might say, but there’s a fine line separating the occasionally working out and sticking to a schedule. Ranil, who has a repertoire of 15 years of experience globally and multi-certification from leading organizations in USA & UK in Fitness science, Performance Training, Personal Training, Group Fitness , Strength & Conditioning , Corrective Exercises and Exercise therapy speaks to the Mirror Magazine

What is the role played by a proper workout in the maintenance of a healthy body?

It plays a vital part by helping improve your heart & lung function, and maintain your muscle strength, muscle tone and endurance. It improves flexibility thereby decreasing the chances of health related diseases. Best of all it releases feel good hormones which will benefit you in a positive way in all areas of your life.

What are the different types of fitness programmes that are included?

It could fall under -

a) Health – Functional training to improve your activities of daily living, and strengthen the musculoskeletal system
b) Aesthetics – to improve Muscle tone and shape your body
c) Sports Performance – to improve your endurance, strength, power, speed and agility.

What is the difference between going to a gym and working out at home?

It all depends on your personal goals; if you just want to be healthy you can go for a walk and few body weight & flexibility exercises will fit the bill. On the other hand if you want to shape your muscles, improve your recreational activity, recover from health related issue (with Doctors approval) then you need to find a gym with proper guidance and train at that facility.

I would use this analogy: If you want to cut your hair or tint you would consult a hairdresser and visit a salon, you would not read it on the internet or social media and try it at home, however if you want to shampoo your hair you could do it at home.

Are there risks involved?

Risks will vary from cardiac problems, strains and sprains, bruises and dislocations. Fractures and a lower level of immunity and list goes on . We always asks our clients to do the medical checkup or if you have medical condition then progress or regress the exercises to suit your goals.

What does it take to become a good fitness trainer?

You need to have passion, talk the talk but you have to be willing to walk the walk. You need to practice what you preach and set an example.

What’s different at O-Tone?

At O-Tone we only cater to personalized training which is result and goal oriented, it may be general fitness, body sculpting, post rehabilitation, or sports performance. If you stick to our plan you would see noticeable results in approximately 10 sessions from where you start and we will bring out your personal best with latest in the fitness industry can offer.

What sort of commitment and dedication is required to train at O-Tone?

As long as you have realistic goals and want to be your personal best we can help you with but if you like to socialize and hang-out at the gym, and not willing to challenge your personal best, have unrealistic short terms goals, you might not like our training concept and attitude. But if you are serious about training and need professional advice and results do visit us.
