The Under 19 inter-school cricket season is at its tail end and now it’s the big match fever which now is being fought out by the top schools. The traditional big match between St. Peter’s and St. Joseph’s ended in a draw with both sides sharing honours.
The clash between Ananda and Nalanda which too ended in a draw had an inauspicious end that culminated in the supporters of both the schools exchanges blows and a good number being injured in the scuffle.

At the time of writing the oldest big match to be played in Sri Lanka between Royal and S. Thomas’ was in progress while the clash in the Jaffna peninsula which was scheduled to be played had to be postponed due to the inclement weather prevailing especially in that part of the country. In the matches that were played during the last seven days which was lesser than the previous weeks saw eight outright wins being recorded. There were three wins in the top division where St. Benedict’s coasted to a ten wicket win over Wesley and D.S. Senanayake College overcoming St. Aloysius Galle which was played for R.I.T. Alles trophy by eight wickets.

The other outright win in this category was achieved by Royal Panadura who outclassed Revatha MMV Balapitiya by an innings to record their fourth victory of the season. This was a tournament match.

In the lower division St. John’s Nugegoda recorded back to back wins with being an innings win with the first being against Karandeniya Central and then the second which was four days later against Tissa Central Kalutara.

The other two outright wins by were P. de S. Kularatne MV Ambalangoda who beat Raddoluwa MV by innings and St Sebastian’s Katuneriya defeating President’s Rajagiriya by seven wickets.

Meanwhile Richmond was unfortunate as they missed out on chalking up their tenth outright win which was against Dharmapala College Pannipitiya. The Palians escaped when they were set a target of 201 runs was struggling on 129 for 9 which ultimately ended in a draw. The other matches played ended in first inning wins for Wesley against Holy Cross Kalutara while Isipathana got the better of Lumbini MV and DSS over Joseph Vaz Wennappuwa in the top division which were tournament matches while the matches between Mahanama Colombo vs Thurstan and St. Sebastian’s vs S. Thomas’ ended in a draw. In the lower division St Anthony’s Wattala, Veluwana MV, Sri Devananda Ambalangoda, Devapathiraja MMV Rathgama, Carey and Bandaranayake MMV Gampaha registered first inning wins over Veluwana MV, Tissa Central Kalutara, Rahula Matara, Siddhartha MV Balapitiya, Ibbagamuwa Central and Kegalle MV respectively.

Left arm spinner Yomesh Ranasinghe of Isipathana achieved the rare feat of claiming a second hat-trick for the season in the match against Lumbini MV. Yomesh achieved his first feat in the match against Joseph Vaz Wennappuwa last month.

There were two other impressive individual performances which were achieved by two cricketers from the outstation. Sahan Arachchige of Bandaranayake MMV Gampaha slammed a 154 against Kegalle MV while Royal Panadura skipper and left arm spinner Thenuka Dhananjaya ended with a match bag of 11 for 72 in the match against Revatha MMV Balapitiya which they won by innings.
