Rainforest Rescue International in collaboration with the Thawalama Divisional Secretariat defined a new way of commemorating children’s day 2012 by drawing more attention towards rain forest conservation with the involvement of children. Most of the rich rainforests are located within the Thawalama division which diverts our attention on delivering conservation practices from childhood to the natives dwelling in the area. Rainforest Rescue International (RRI), a well dedicated environment conservation organization runs an after school programme called Rainforest Rangers with the schools around the rainforest areas in Thawalama and Hiniduma in Galle. The aim of these programmes is to raise positive attitudes and create nature lovers to protect the vulnerable environment with the help of trained rangers in environment conservation. It is anticipated that this programme will create nature lovers and environment protectors by the models established by the rainforest rangers.

On the 6th of October, to commemorate the World Children’s Day in a special way, Rainforest Rangers marched to the Thawalama Vidyaraja College whilst holding environment conservation banners that was aimed at creating public awareness and a sense of responsibility towards environment conservation. For this walk various children’s clubs representing the Thawalama area contributed with different cultural and presentation items to make the event more fun and interactive. During the walk the rangers made others aware on how children can contribute to save the rain forest for future. The walk helped to disseminate the message of conservation with the involvement of children to conserve the environment around them. Most of the village dwellers do not show much concern for the value of the Rainforests and its biodiversity; these types of events will help to build an attitude of conservation among Children as well as adults, who are unaware about the adverse consequences of deforestation and environment damage

The main event, at the conclusion of the walk, was held in the college main hall and was organized by Thawalama District Secretariat in collaboration with Rainforest Rescue International. The event was chaired by. Minister Piyasena Gamage and with Mr. S. Sathyananda the Commissioner of the Child rights and Probation, and the Thawalama District Secretary and other government, and non government officers. Over 1000 children in Thawalama participated in this event. This event concluded with the rangers participating in the launch of the poster developed by them, this poster was then handed over to the Hon. Minister. The Rangers also made a special presentation on their activities and how they conduct this programme.
