The alumni of an educational institute or university form a strong network of individuals who share a common background with respect to their initial years of higher education. The group shares a special bond and the networking inevitably brings about great opportunities.

Past students of ICBT who obtained their degrees from the Middlesex University have formed a Sri Lanka chapter of Middlesex University Alumni and a get-together is organised annually with the support of ICBT. On the nineteenth of October 2012, the third annual alumni get-together was hosted with the attendance of past alumni and students of ICBT – Middlesex University, who were preparing for their graduation the next day. The event was attended by Vice Chancellor of Middlesex University – UK, Prof. Michael Driscoll and Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Middlesex University Steve Knight, Country Director of British Council Sri Lanka Mr. Tony Reilly, and Chairman of ICBT campus Mr. Jagath Alwis.

ICBT currently offers a range of undergraduate as well as post-graduate degrees from Middlesex University, including BSc (hons) degrees in Information Technology, Business Information Systems and Management, BA (hons) degree in Business Management, MSc in Business Information Systems Management, Master of Business Administration, and MSc in Software engineering.

The event facilitated an evening of interactions amongst alumni, soon-to-be alumni and the distinguished guests present at the event.
Jagath Alwis, Chairman of ICBT addressed the gathering “we are very happy to work with Middlesex University. The university offers a very high quality of programmes and education. All of you are gathered together to share your experiences and I encourage you to work together through out, and continue to enhance your knowledge even after graduation. People will judge ICBT and Middlesex University through you, you are our ambassadors to the outside world. I sincerely hope you make ICBT and Middlesex University proud with your achievements. We have more than 800 graduates from various degree programmes of the Middlesex University, tomorrow about 200 more students will join that group – so we have an alumni of about 1000 students. Additionally, we have 50 students enrolled in the MBA programme as well. You are indeed privileged to be a part of that group and I wish the best to all of you”
Prof. Driscoll addressed the gathering “I am very happy to be here in Sri Lanka and more importantly I am happy to be here to attend the alumni reception as well as the graduation ceremony of the Middlesex university students at ICBT. Middlesex University is not an exclusive university, we are inclusive – in terms of our students, lecturers and staff. We believe that being an inclusive university helps us to learn and understand each other better. Alumni my message to you is work hard, not just for yourselves. But work hard for your families, for your careers. Support those around you and share your learning. Good luck to all of you”.

Stephan Gunaratna, a student graduating from BSc (hons) in Information Technology who is also the batch-top student, addressed his colleagues gathered at the event.

Tony Reilly, Country Director of British Council said “the students gathered here today are beneficiaries of a global trend to offer international education, this is called transnational education. This gives Sri Lankan students a greater choice and flexibility in their education, while it gives universities in the United Kingdom the opportunity to internationalise their programmes and deliver the programme to international students. Recent figures indicate that 20% of the students studying for a UK degree are not in the United Kingdom but learn through international campuses located throughout the world and thereby gain an internationally recognised UK degree overseas. ICBT and Middlesex University has formed a formidable partnership. Middlesex University has a reputation for delivering programmes of high academic quality and more importantly of high employability. Students and alumni, education is the single most investment one has made, so make the most of it. I would like to say thank you to ICBT and Middlesex University for sharing the British Councils mission of international education”.

The ICBT and Middlesex University partnership has produced alumni with internationally recognised qualifications and an international outlook who are capable of making significant contributions to their chosen fields of work.
