St. Thomas’ Girls’ High School is a leading girls’ school in the Matara District. This legendary girls’ school experienced the reputation as one of the most efficient and well-regarded schools since its inception and reached its 125th anniversary in 2010.

St’ Thomas G.H.S. has another respectable history as Mrs. Molly Senanayake the wife of Sri Lanka’s first Prime Minister D.S. Senanayake is a past pupil which is a great honour to the school.

The foundation for this esteemed educational institution was laid in 1885 by Rev. John Stevenson Lyly, as an English medium school. Mrs. Calendar assumed her duties as the first principal of the school. After 53 years Mrs. S. Samarasinghe was appointed as the first Sinhalese principal of the school. In the early days Senior Cambridge being the most recognized, there were classes only up to that level. The school was acquired by the government in 1961. Subsequently the school was enriched as a national school in 1993.

College Eastern Band

Presently, the college is operating as a 6 to 13 National School, with 125 teachers, 30 non-academic staff and over 2750 students and ventures to maintain the high profile it has grossed. The college highly assisted, by the present principal Mrs. R.S. Pathirana, who was appointed as the 22nd principal to the college. She bagged the “Prathiba Pranama” President award as the best Principal in 1 AB schools in 2011 as well as in 2012. The most dedicated and devoted principal and the academic staffs are the great pillars behind each of the educational successes of the school. The victory of the science teacher Mrs. Ramesha Palihakkara, who was awarded as the best science teacher 2011, is one of the best examples for their dedication.

The school has gained rapid progress in the educational side and was able to bring forth many doctors, engineers, lawyers, businessmen, government and non-government officers to the nation. Even today the highest number of medical students, engineering students, graduates and lawyers are selected from the St .Thomas’ Girls’ High School. They are proud to say that they annually enjoy more than 92% of successful results in their G.C.E.(O/L) examination.

In G.C.E.(A/L), annually large number of students get the university entrance. Science and Maths streams bring the entire district ranks to the school. In 2011, they gained the district first rank in both Bio Science and Commerce streams. Likewise they have obtained District 1st, 3rd, 4th,16th , 20th and 21st in the Commerce stream, 1st , 9th , and 17th ranks in the Bio Science stream and 4th , 9th and 10th ranks in the Arts stream have been obtained by the Thomian girls.

The first Thomian Girl Guide troup was formed in 1920. Since then they have earned the reputation in leadership qualities as well. The College computer unit was inaugurated in 2000 and they gained Provincial first place and all island 7th place in the Most Productive Computer Unit Competition in 2011.

College Western Band

Apart from the academic performance the school is bent on discipline and religious nurtures and deliberates its prime objective and responsibility in modeling the character of individuals. In view of this, students are made to participate in sill campaigns, religious activities and in other coordinated activities such as collecting funds to hospitals, releasing cattle.
Sports take a prominent place in St. Thomas’ G.H.S. They have produced many National level as well as International level sports personalities to the country.

Not only in sports but they have also sharpened their aesthetics activities too. D.S.S.V.A. Upawangsha won third place in 2011 at the All Island Inter School Dancing and Drama Competition. Monali Kaumagda obtained a special award in the all island Mona Lisa Art Competition. Furthermore the quiz team, athletics team, dancing troupe and music troupe gained many awards and 1st places at provincial competitions.

The Girl Guides, Science Day, Sinhala Language Day, English Day etc. plays a prominent part in their annual schedule and the students have won many awards and medals at National, Provincial and District competitions.

The school won the Excellence Award as the Best Environment Friendly School of the year, 2011 in Matara District.

The Thomian girls are inculcated with good discipline, high leadership skill, principled characters and this warm family atmosphere is provided in order so that the children can thrive and develop into good citizens.
