Mrs. Indu Ratnayake, as Additional Secretary to the Ministry of Defence holds an important and time consuming job. In this backdrop she also has to take into account her duties as mother to Thilini.

The juncture at which a child is ready to step away from the protected school environment and step into the professional learning and work environment is a highly important and crucial one. As Thilini Gunasekera was poised at this juncture and wondering which path to take, Mrs. Indu Ratnayake too did her own research and arrived at some startling conclusions. Many educational Institutes and Universities offering IT education didn’t guarantee a job post graduation, the curriculum did not reflect the development of any other skill apart from the technical knowledge, the lecture panel did not always consist of industry experts able to offer a practical insight into the industry.

However when speaking to other parents whose children had studied at the Informatics Institute of Technology (IIT-www.iit.ac.lk) as well as to past alumni, Mrs. Ratnayake discovered that IIT alumni were among the best placed, well positioned, well paid employees in the industry. Additionally the UK Universities the Institute was affiliated to were of a prestigious ranking and awarding of marks for course work was strictly the same for students from all across the world.

Having discussed these with her daughter, Thilini was enrolled at IIT and since then mother and daughter are convinced beyond a shadow of doubt that their decision was the best. “Not only did Thilini have the opportunity to learn from the Industry’s best, but also gained valuable insight into the industry working. The assignment based course structure and the projects such as the final year project showcased at the ‘cutting edge’ event have greatly developed essential skills and requirements such as leadership, management, and time management skills, innovative thinking and people skills. I am proud of the person Thilini has become since joining IIT” said proud Mrs Ratnayake.

Mrs. Ratnayake also applauded the many opportunities for Institutional, National, Regional and International competitions afforded by IIT. Thilini was in fact the proud recipient of the first place award for the ‘Lan Challenge 2011”. The extracurricular activities organized by the Institute are of immense value to the students offering them a welcome respite from their studies whilst at the same time developing essential people skills. During her third year placement period, Thilini worked at Virtusa. Mrs. Ratnayake was emphatic in her praise at this unique programme structure incorporated by IIT that afforded a platform for students to see their course work in a practical light and which was at a timely moment in that it enabled them to gain valuable practical and industry know how to apply to their final year of study. “Having seen the remarkable development in every sphere in my daughter I would not hesitate to recommend to others, as it was recommended to me, to choose IIT for themselves or their sons or daughters. I appreciate the level of commitment and dedication of the IIT staff and the effort they put into structuring a wholesome and balanced educational experience for their students. Further I would not hesitate to recommend IIT as the best higher study option for students who are seeking for an employable degree which is recognized across the globe. Therefore I invite parents to come with their sons & daughters to explore the options at IIT because I would like others also to be benefitted like my daughter Thilini” concluded Mrs. Ratnayake.
