Soft Skills+ 2012 programme, an initiative of SLIIT’s Faculty of Business, successfully concluded on the 28th of September 2012 at SLIIT Malabe Campus. Secondary school students and teachers from Colombo and schools island-wide participated in the event.

The highlight of the event was the students group activities aimed at honing students’ soft skills and quiz competition, comprising five focus areas; General Knowledge, News and Current Affairs, Sports, History and Arts and Entertainment. “The goal of the programme was to spark the interest of secondary school children and develop their soft skills by enhancing their knowledge on a wide range of disciplines outside the subject material in the school curriculum” states Dr. Theekshana Suraweera, Dean – Faculty of Business at SLIIT.

Students need to understand the importance of developing soft skills along with academic skill to succeed in their lives says Prof. S. Karunaratne, Chairman of SLIIT. “SLIIT’s Faculty of Business seeks to make Soft Skills+ not just an annual feature but also an on-going process throughout the year” explains Professor Lalith Gamage, President/CEO of SLIIT.

“The feedback we received from industry and academia clearly indicates that there is a severe need for the development of soft skills among Sri Lankan children. We are going to make a concerted effort through the programme to fill this gap and make this project a part of SLIIT’s corporate social responsibility initiatives”.

Bandaranaike College, Gampaha secured first place for the quiz competition, with Devi Balika College as first runner up and Nalanda College – Colombo in third place. The event was also supported by Sheffield Hallam University (UK) and John Keells Computer Services (Pvt) Ltd.
