Shadow cast over Bandaranaike day
Tomorrow is S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike commemoration day. Once it was a public holiday but with the Bandaranaike era now largely confined to history books, passersby were wondering what was happening around the giant SWRD statue at Galle Face with workmen clearing the surroundings. Questions were raised when they saw the huge Shangri-La board in the background with the Chinese company planning to set up a hotel-and-shopping mall complex in the vicinity. The Government has denied rumours that the statue might be moved and the Bandaranaike commemoration committee chairman Alavi Moulana said yesterday, the ceremonies would be held in Horagolla tomorrow to mark the 52nd anniversary of the assassination of the former Prime Minister.
