Moratuwa Arts forum AGM 2008

Moratuwa Arts Forum, (MAF) is due to hold it’s 15th Annual General Meeting today at the Sripali Reception Hall in Moratuwa.

The show will get on the road with the rendition of the Moratuwa Theme song ‘Siribara Moratu Game’ written by Priya Peiris of Labambas fame and the tune by Composer and Conductor C L Fonseka. The president on this day would present the audio CD of this song to the Cultural Secretary of the Moratuwa Secretariat Office, the Mayor and the Chief Guest and thereafter to all associations, clubs and schools of Moratuwa to be used in the future as the stage opener of any function as this song gives what Moratuwa is famous for and produced in the town.

The highlights of the MAF AGM this year would be the presentation of awards and the main Asoka Peiris Memorial Award that is presented to a personality who had blossomed in a form of arts and the service rendered to his selected field and the community, this year it is awarded to Sunil Perera of Gypsies for the service rendered to the music form of arts and the community. There would also be 5 other awards presented to the bevy of MAF dancers who had rendered great service to the community by conducting training classes for the upcoming talented young girls and boys of the Moratuwa town in the form of dance arts. The recipients this year are Janadhari Salgado, Rupika Sutherland, Jayagra Mendis, Varuni Cooray and Kanani Fernando.

The Co-Project Chairmen of the conducted projects during the year will also be awarded mementos and so will be the project committee members.

Those artistes who had produced their original songs on audio CDs during the year are been given the opportunity to perform and the line up would be Merril Fernando with his “Sudu Paata Gawme”, Nalaka Soysa along with Lankika Perera will do the song, “Bolgoda Gange” and finally Luckey Deva will render his “Mal Wessata”. Rupika Sutherland and her students of her dance academy would add colour by their dance performances to entertain the guests.

This year the incumbent President Laksiri Fernando wishes to create the precedence by calling the membership to appoint one of the incumbent Vice Presidents and thereafter to have an unwritten law within the Forum to identify future Presidents by appointing them as Vice Presidents. Hence this year the mantle of Presidency of the Moratuwa Arts Forum would go to the Incumbent Vice President Clinton Fernando who was the former leader of Gaylord Revivals and the former drummer of Wheels Combo of yesteryear.

The Chief Guest who would grace the occasion will be the well known TV presenter Chamuditha Samarawickrema
