Despite the war and violence and soaring prices, the National New Year brings together the Sinhala and the Tamil communities as no other event does. These pictures show the traditional link — women preparing kevum in the South and a scene in Jaffna where there was brisk trade for the Putthandu festival. Pix by J. Weerasekera and M. A. Weerawansa moots new front
The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) dissident faction led by its parliamentary group chief, Wimal Weerawansa, has mooted the formation of a Deshapremi Peramuna (Patriotic Front) and pledged to work under that banner. They have vowed to take this action if their disputes with the party leadership are not amicably settled.

Price hikes after Avurudu
While prices of New Year items have risen to their highest levels and beyond the reach of thousands of people this year, further post-Avurudu shocks are likely with fuel, domestic gas and milk food prices going up.

Be positive even in defeat Big Ben marks 150th birthday
As sportsmen you have to be positive, even in defeat. And this week we have been able to reflect back on the 1-1 series draw with West Indies and pick-out a few silver linings. However, sadly, those silver linings cannot erase the frustration of having shared a series we should have definitely won.

Making Avurudu memories King Vijayabahu 3
Greetings yet again, folks, and yes, Subha Aluth Avuruddak Wewa! Puththandu Nal Valthukkal! Ok, right now you are probably dressed in your brand new Avurudu attire and are just about to stuff yourself with Kewum, Kokis, Aasmi and what not; all those simply delicious sweets that you just cannot resist.
King Vijayabahu III did not have a direct relationship to the previous kings. His father was Vijayamalla. Those who were engaged in literary work during this period, give a royal connection to him. They have described in detail, these connections. However it is said that Vijayamalla was the ruler of a small province. This too is debatable.
