Final Rites for veteran politician Mahinda Wijesekera held in Matara
View(s):The final rites of senior politician and former minister Mahinda Wijesekera, (83), who passed away on Thursday was held in his hometown in Matara yesterday.
Mr Wijesekera was a leading political figure in the Matara District and had a parliamentary career spanning nearly three decades; first as Member of Parliament for Matara from the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and later as a MP from the United National Party (UNP). He also held several ministerial portfolios including Fisheries, and Post and Telecommunication.
Mr Wijesekera suffered serious injuries in an LTTE bomb attack in 2009 at Akurana. He was rarely seen in public after that.
Mr Wijesekera began his political career as a student activist. He was a leading member of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) having joined the group while he was a student at the Vidyodaya University. He was among those tried for the conspiracy to topple the government in the 1971 insurrection by the Criminal Justice Commission established in 1972.
His son Kanchana Wijesekera served as Matara District MP and went on to serve as Minister of Energy from 2022-2024.
