Lankan troops to resume Haiti peacekeeping
View(s):Sri Lanka will shortly resume peacekeeping operations in Haiti after a lapse of more than ten years, senior government officials said yesterday.
Approval has been given for the Sri Lankan peacekeepers to join operations in Haiti following talks held with the UN Department of Peace Operations in New York.
Foreign Affairs Minister Vijitha Herath also held talks with the UN Resident Coordinator Marc-Andre Franche to expedite the deployment of the Sri Lankan peacekeepers in the Caribbean nation.
Sri Lanka ended its operations with the United Nations Stabilisation Mission in Haiti in 2015 after serving for nearly 11 years. In all, more than 16,000 Sri Lankan military personnel served in Haiti between 2004 and 2015.
Six Lankan soldiers also lost their lives during operations in Haiti, and 18 were injured during their mission.
