Foreigners arrested in raid on Chilaw cyberscam hub

A clandestine operation led by a Chinese group posing as tourists was busted by the Computer Crimes Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department this week with the arrest of 152 foreigners in the Ambakandawila area of Iranawila.
They were allegedly involved in financial fraud via the internet.
Over 130 of them were Chinese men and women while there were also a few Vietnamese and Malaysians.
- A majority were Chinese nationals, with a few Vietnamese and Malaysians.
They had rented a luxury hotel near the beach in Iranawila, Chilaw and were engaged in the operation for over a month.
At the time of the raid, the foreign nationals had attempted to flee, and the raiding team with the help of another group had managed to arrest them.
Two Chinese nationals who tried to escape were injured and were admitted to the Chilaw General Hospital.
Some 143 computers, 370 mobile phones and other items were taken into custody.
They were produced before Additional District Judge S T Abeyratne at the Chilaw District and Magistrate courts and remanded until April 9. Investigations are underway.
