Treasury denies Bribery Commission officials pay hikes
View(s):By Ranjith Padmasiri
The Treasury has left out a salary increase for the three Commissioners and the Director General of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC), despite the Parliament’s Committee on Public Finance recommending salary hikes for the last two years.
With Parliament set to debate a resolution over cadre and salary structures of the Commission on March 17, the recommendations were left out for a third time by the Department of Management Services under the Ministry of Finance, Economic Planning and Development.
According to the motion, published as an addendum in Parliament’s order book, the proposed changes include a significant increase in salaries and allowances for CIABOC staff. Under the proposed salary structure, an Additional Director General is eligible for a salary hike of up to Rs. 261,500 along with a proposed Anti-Corruption Risk Allowance of Rs. 140,000.
The 971-member cadre Commission’s proposed salary hike is in alignment with salaries for Legal Officers attached to the Attorney General’s Department.
Except for the top-tier officials of the Commission, the Commission can determine a Performance Allowance of up to Rs. 10,000 with respect to the posts of Senior Investigation Officer and Investigation Officer as well, according to the motion.
