Fisheries Minister Ramaligam Chandrasekar, has called for an immediate investigation into the boat accident reported in Jaffna on Friday, where two devotees were killed when their boat capsized in the Jaffna sea.
At least twelve persons were rescued, and two others were admitted to the Jaffna Teaching Hospital after being rescued by the Navy and Coast Guard.
The devotees were on their way to take part in the annual feast of St Anthony’s shrine located in Palaithivu, one of the islands in the northern sea. The boat capsized shortly after departing from the Gurunagar area in Jaffna while travelling toward Palathivu Island.
According to the Ministry, a detailed report has been requested on whether the boat involved in the accident was seaworthy, whether the number of passengers exceeded the permitted limit, and whether proper maritime safety procedures had been followed.
Both the Police and the Navy launched a coordinated joint search and rescue operation for those missing at sea.
The victims were identified as Stephen Francis (57) from Nawatkuli and M. Joseph (80) from Gurunagar.
