The day to day lives of those living in Puttalam district are affected as more ash particles have been emitting from the Norochcholai Lakvijaya power plant in the past few days.

They complained that the situation has been aggravated with the reported use of sub-slandered coal to generate electricity. They said the ash emitted from the coal power plant is spreading over a six mile radius as black and white smoke.

The villages of Daluwa and Setha pola are the most affected with ash falling on houses and cultivated crops. The residents say they also face health issues due to the bad air quality.

A resident of Sathi pola area Anton Prabesh said the power plant has become a huge hazard to them. He said both black and white ash particles have covered everything in the area.

“We don’t know what to do. The air quality has dropped affecting especially those with respiratory ailments. But little is being done to address the issue,” he complained.

Another resident Christy Fernando said that the power plant is providing eccentricity to the country but at a cost to them. “Only we know the hazards we face due to ash emissions,” he added.
