Essential supplies including clothing, food and other necessities were quickly provided to Iranian sailors at the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital who were rescued by the Sri Lanka Navy and the Sri Lanka Air Force.
Karapitiya Hospital Director Dr. S.D.U.M. Ranga, told the Sunday Times that the community offered clothes, shoes, meals and dry rations.
“Nearly everything was provided by the people around the hospital. We provided meals from the hospital, but they are sailors and their meal patterns are very different from ours, so we had to ensure they received sufficient food,” he said.
Late that evening, when the hospital director reached out for help, the Galle Branch of the Sri Lanka Cancer Society also stepped in.
“At around 7 p.m., a few members including our Vice President A. H. Kamal went to our stores to gather whatever supplies were available,” said the society’s Secretary, T. H. Chandrasena.
The items were supplies routinely kept for cancer patients who travel long distances for treatment and arrive at the hospital with few personal belongings. “That night, those supplies were redirected to assist the rescued sailors,” he said.
The society contributed sarongs, bedsheets, towels trousers, bars of soap, toothpaste and toothbrushes.
In addition tea, sugar, biscuits and bottles of drinking water were also provided. Local residents and well-wishers also contributed clothing, footwear and meals.
