Universities (Amendment) Bill certified
View(s):Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne has certified the Universities (Amendment) Bill which was passed by parliament in January. The bill seeks to amend the Universities Act, No. 16 of 1978. The relevant gazette notification was published on 21.11.2025, and the bill was presented to parliament for its first reading on 03.12.2025, by the prime minister and minister of education. The objectives of this act include granting authority to the faculty board to elect a dean from among the senior professors, professors, associate professors and senior lecturers (Grade I) of the faculty, enable the council to remove a dean from office prior to the completion of his term of office and introducing limitations with respect to the term of office of a dean of a faculty. In addition, the act amends and clearly defines the procedure to be followed by the council when appointing a head of a department of study. It also enables the council to remove the head of a department of study from his office prior to the completion of his term of office and introduces limitations applicable with respect to the terms of office of a head of a department of study.
