The Sri Lanka Institute of Packaging (SLIP) marked a significant milestone with the successful conclusion of its 50th Annual General Meeting (AGM). The landmark event brought together past presidents, distinguished guests, and members of the Institute, providing an opportunity to reflect on SLIP’s journey and reaffirm its commitment to advancing Sri Lanka’s packaging industry.
Presenting his Annual Report, President Mr. Thusith Wijesinghe reviewed the Institute’s performance for the 2024/2025 term, describing the year as a particularly dynamic and impactful period. He highlighted key milestones, industry-focused initiatives, and activities delivered in support of the packaging sector. Mr. Wijesinghe also expressed his sincere appreciation to the membership, the Deputy President, and the Executive Committee for their dedication, collaboration, and unwavering support throughout the year.
SLIP – Key Highlights 2025 Policy & Industry Engagement:
SLIP actively contributed to national policy and industry dialogue, particularly through the Project on Strengthening Plastic Management Capacity in collaboration with the Central Environmental Authority. Subcommittee members participated in discussions on Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and broader sustainability issues, representing the packaging sector in key forums.
Education & Training:
Certificate Award Ceremony held on 27th February 2025 at Ramada, honouring 28 participants. Diploma Programme in Packaging Technology commenced with 30 participants, preparing the next generation of packaging professionals through a curriculum blending theory with real-world application.
Major Events:
- n Lanka Pack 2025 (23–25 October) successfully reaffirmed its position as Sri Lanka’s premier packaging industry platform.
- Packaging Week 2025 hosted the 114th WPO Board Meeting, Working Group Sessions, and Executive Committee Meeting in Colombo, attended by 34 members representing five continents. SLIP received a special certificate of appreciation from WPO for its contribution to organising these events.
- Global Packaging Forum – “Packaged to Perfection” (30 October, BMICH) brought together over 300 delegates, including WPO and UNIDO representatives, international speakers, and local industry leaders, focusing on sustainability, innovation, and circular economy practices.
- Lanka Star 2025 Awards Night honored outstanding achievements in packaging, innovation, and creativity, with sincere appreciation extended to the panel of judges for their tireless work over two days.
Membership Growth & Recognition:
Membership now exceeds 150 corporate and life members.
Introduction of professional membership categories: Fellow (FSLIP), Member (MSLIP), Associate Member (ASLIP), and Associate, enhancing recognition for professional qualifications and contributions to the industry.
The financial performance of the Institute was presented by Treasurer Mr. Lakshan Pethiyagoda, who provided a comprehensive overview of SLIP’s financial position, underscoring the Institute’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and sound financial governance.
A key highlight of the AGM was the appointment of Mr. Nishan Perera as President of SLIP for the 2025/2026 term. Following his appointment, the newly elected President announced the Office Bearers for the new term. In his address, President Mr. Nishan Perera thanked the membership for their confidence in the newly appointed leadership team and reaffirmed the Committee’s commitment to strengthening SLIP’s role in advancing the packaging profession, both locally and internationally.
The 50th AGM concluded on a positive and forward-looking note, reinforcing SLIP’s continued dedication to professionalism, innovation, sustainability, and excellence in Sri Lanka’s packaging industry.
