View(s):
Primary and Secondary schooling is compulsory for children aged 6 to 16, with the majority of children attending school from the age of 5. There are 13 school years and attending public schools is free for New Zealand citizens and permanent residents from a person’s 5th birthday to the end of the calendar year following their 19th birthday. New Zealand has an adult literacy rate of 99% and over half of the population aged between 15 to 29 holds a tertiary qualification.
For international students there are 2 types of government-owned institutions; universities and polytechnics (ITPs) in addition to private training establishments (PTEs). New Zealand’s higher education system offers you a wide range of programmes and education providers for you to choose from in any region of the country. The programmes include; Diploma, Bachelor Degree, Graduate Diploma, Postgraduate Diploma, Masters and PhD.
Depending on the level of your study programme your partner may be eligible to apply for a dependent partner work visa and children may attend school free of charge. International students are permitted to work 25 hours per week during study.
New Zealand has a unique teaching style that helps you to grow as a person. Study involves a balance of learning practical skills and gaining real world experience and students are encouraged to think creatively, independently and analytically. All 8 of New Zealand’s universities are ranked in the top 2% in the world globally (QS World University Rankings). New Zealand’s students are the 5th most creative thinkers in the world (OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) (2022)). New Zealand ranks 7th for highest performing graduates – ahead of the US, Canada and England (OECD Skill Surveys)
Once you have completed your qualification, you may be able to apply for a post-study work visa up to 3 years, depending on your level of study.
New Zealand qualifications are recognised globally and Thames International will be conducting The New Zealand Education Fair 2026 on Saturday the 7th March at the Galle Face Hotel, Colombo and Sunday the 8th March at the Queens Hotel, Kandy. The events are supported by Education New Zealand
