The Acting President of the Kandy Bar Association Shantha Ratnayake PC said it is time to think of constructing a Superior Courts Complex at Pallekelle, where two acres of land had previously been allocated for that purpose before a complex was constructed in the present site in Kandy.
He said that this current complex, now inundated by the floods and covered with muddy water, would take time to return to normalcy, even though the staff are doing their utmost to clean up the premises. He said that the damage has been done because when the complex was built in 2005 no evaluation of impact from the environment had been done.
The Acting President, who was also former president, said many valuable legal records have been damaged by the floods, and added that this site in fact used to be paddy land.
He said that during Gam Udawa former president Ranasinghe Premadasa wished to build the complex in Pallekelle. He reiterated the authorities should build a new courts complex in a proper place which can safely house important legal records.
