Commandos rescue infant
View(s):An elite 8-member team from the 2nd Commando Regiment of the Sri Lanka Army spearheaded a dramatic rescue of a 3-month-old infant under extremely challenging conditions from the remote Meemure area.
This 8-member team had found a 3-month-old infant and her grandmother while searching a house in the Karambaketiya village on December 3. The infant was in an extremely weak state at the time she was found as she had been separated from her mother and was in need of mother’s milk.
Realising the danger the child was in, the team had taken her amid heavy rain that night to the Meemure Aranya Senasanaya. After establishing contact, they had developed a section of the playground of the Kaikawala Vidyalaya on December 4 which was sufficient for a helicopter to land in. This enabled a team from the Army Medical Corps to land at Meemure on December 4 on a Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) Bell 412 helicopter which took off from the SLAF Base at Digana, Kandy.
They had examined both the infant and the grandmother and upon deciding that they were in sufficiently good health to undertake the journey, both were airlifted under the supervision of the medical team to the Digana SLAF Base. Once there, the commandos took steps to safely hand over the infant to her mother.
