Education ministry to assist disaster-affected schoolchildren, schools

The Education Ministry will assist disaster-affected students, while the President’s Fund will provide Rs 25,000 to each school-going child affected by floods and landslides to support their educational needs.

After an assessment is done, the ministry plans to provide vouchers for students to buy shoes, bags and other needs.

There will also be psychological assistance for students who are suffering from trauma due to the effects of the natural disaster, an MoE official said.

He added that 90% of the schools will be open by December 16, while the rest will take a little longer.

Schools which are sheltering displaced people will be vacated before the 16th he said.

The official added that the immediate need will be to provide all schools with sanitary facilities, drinking water and ensure safety for students; adding that replacing labs and computer room facilities etc will take longer.
