“THEEVRA: The Second Rendition”: A Grandeur of Artistry, Culture and Brilliance

The Old Trinitians’ Oriental Music Association (OTOMA)  hosted the second edition of their biennial musical gala, “THEEVRA: The Second Rendition” at the Polgolla NICD Auditorium, where brilliant young musicians of the Oriental Music Society of Trinity College, Kandy showcased their musical talents. Being a celebration of artistry across generations and cultures, the evening featured the legendary Edward Jayakody and the sensational Umaria Sinhawansha as guest artists to ornament the night.

THEEVRA was enriched with 29 thematic segments, with each song meaningfully capturing the essence of life and inspiring audiences to think beyond convention. The evening was inaugurated by honouring the two pillars of every prosperous society: parents and teachers, with the teacher’s tribute being an original composition by the Oriental Music Society. Moreover, the extravaganza paid homage to the silver screen, with the performances of ‘Hinahenna Romeo Mamai’ from Rajagedara Paraviyo, ‘Hada Viman Dorin’ from Kasthuri Suwanda, and ‘Sun Raha Hai Na’ from Aashiqui 2.

Adding to the grandeur of the evening, THEEVRA featured a duo of luminaries in the Sri Lankan music industry. For the first guest performance, the stage celebrated five timeless classics by Edward Jayakody, including ‘Nihanda Kalpana’, ‘Chakgudu’, and ‘Epa Sande Obe Sina’. Following on, Umaria Sinhawansha made a graceful entrance with her elegant ‘Manda Pama’ later into the night, followed by ‘Pathu Pem Pathum’, ‘Hanthana Sihine’, and two other iconic releases. Together, Edward Jayakody’s presence and Umaria Sinhawansha’s energy made the evening one to remember.

A key purpose of THEEVRA has always been to go beyond the convention of mere entertainment and foster a lifelong appreciation for music. In line with this vision, the surplus proceeds from ticket sales and sponsorships will serve as the primary source of funding for ‘DoNations’, the charitable campaign launched by OTOMA to enrich music education across Sri Lanka. As a fruitful result of this initiative, Ambuwangala Primary School, Rambukkana, the Sabaragamuwa Province beneficiary of ‘DoNations’, joined hands with THEEVRA to decorate the night with a heartfelt rendition of ‘Pipi Kusuma Wadulu’.

Carrying forward the legacy of its inaugural edition, THEEVRA: The Second Rendition redefined musical shows in the hill capital yet again by raising standards and being a part of a greater cause. This biennial tradition, concluding its second chapter, is a testament to the enduring commitment of Trinity College, Kandy, to enrich music and culture. With that, THEEVRA: The Second Rendition came to an astounding fruition amidst heartfelt reactions and overwhelmingly positive feedback. With gratitude to the organisers, artists, performers, and supporters whose collective efforts made the event possible, THEEVRA leaves behind cherished memories and a lasting imprint as a cultural milestone, with hopes of opening its curtains again in the near future.
