St Benedict’s prize-giving recognises young achievers
View(s):The annual prize-giving celebrating 160 years of La Sallian excellence of St Benedict’s College was held at the college auditorium, presided over by eminent Old Benedictine Professor Saminda Prasad Fernando, Professor of Zoology of the Open University Sri Lanka.
The event conducted with the usual Benedictine style and finesse, saw certificates, prizes, gold medals, and scholarships awarded to 360 young Benedictines for their hard work, commitment, service and achievements during 2024.
Rev Bro Niran Perera, Acting Director of St Benedict’s College, introduced Prof Fernando as a professional held in high esteem for his academic achievements, ethical leadership and service to society. Professor Fernando in his address to young Benedictines said that values like faith, hardwork, discipline, team spirit , he leant as a student and a cricketer at St Benedict’s College, gave him direction in life.
Education is not only about passing exams, he said, it’s about learning how to think, nurturing curiosity, compassion towards others and service to the community.
He urged students to spend time outdoors and observe how nature and education go hand in hand.
He paid tribute to his teachers from his days in the primary school and later in upper school, some of them present on the occasion. Guest of honour at the event was distinguished Old Benedictine Rajive Dissanayake, Executive Vice President of Hatton National Bank PLC.
The highlight of the evening was the presentation of Special Awards to 63 outstanding students of the year. Among the most coveted awards were:
1964 Champion Cricket Team Gold Medals and Rev Sr Jayabalagi and Mrs Theresa Jayasuriya Memorial Prizes to the Best All Round Students to Angelo Fonseka and Oshada Dias (Joint ).JSN.
Anandarajah Memorial Prize for the Best All Round Student of the Primary School awarded to Sahas Caldera. The prestigious Dr Cecil Saverimutto Medical Scholarship awarded to Sivarasa Abinthan.
The Aloy P Mallawaaratchy Scholarship, which covers the entire duration of studies in a state university, was awarded to Angelo Rodrigo.
The Best Academic Achievement and the R H Phillips Gold Medal for science was awarded to Sineth Fernando.
The vote of thanks was delivered by Head Prefect Vikum Devinda.
