The government plans to introduce a quota to enable students with disabilities to enter all faculties in state universities, Deputy Minister of Education Madhura Senevirathna said.

He said a decision has not been taken yet on the exact quota for special needs students, but it would be decided shortly. The necessary infrastructure facilities for such students to access the faculties too will be provided, he added. The decision had been taken at a sub-committee meeting held at the ministry this week.

The deputy minister also said the government is taking steps to fill vacancies in universities in both the academic and non-academic staff sectors.

There are around 1,400 vacancies for academic staff in all universities due to some going overseas and retirements, he said.

There are numerous vacancies among non-academic staff too. He said there will also be a cadre revision for both sectors, and a committee has been appointed to recommend how the revision can be done.

The necessary allocations for this have been set aside in the budget, he said.
